Tummy Tuck

Individuals may develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes include:

  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prior surgery
  • Significant fluctuations in weight

Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a procedure that removes excess abdominal wall fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles, creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.

A good candidate for tummy tuck surgery:

  • Is physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • Has realistic expectations
  • Is a nonsmoker
  • Is bothered by the appearance of her abdomen

A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. It cannot correct stretch marks but these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised.

Like every surgery, Tummy tuck includes risks, such as risks from anesthesia, bleeding, fluid collection, infection, poor healing, unfavorable scarring, skin loss, residual or recurrent looseness of skin, deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, suboptimal aesthetic results, and the possible need for revisionary surgery.

The contour improvement after a tummy tuck will be visible after the post-op swelling resolves. The scar may take several months to fade as much as it will. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary.

The results of a tummy tuck would be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in weight. Individuals planning substantial weight loss or considering future pregnancies would therefore be advised to postpone a tummy tuck.
