Body Contouring

Dramatic weight loss has many health benefits. However, substantial weight loss from surgery and/or lifestyle changes results in the skin and tissues being unable to conform to the reduced body size due to lack of elasticity.

Body contouring surgery removes excess sagging skin and fat while shaping the underlying support tissues. This results in a better-proportioned appearance with smoother contours.

Body contouring procedures include

  • Facelift: corrects sagging of the mid-face, jowls and neck
  • Breast lift: corrects sagging, flattened breasts
  • Tummy tuck: removes apron of excess lower abdominal skin
  • Lower body lifts: corrects sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs
  • Medial thigh lift: corrects sagging of the inner thigh
  • Arm lift: corrects sagging of the upper arms

A good body contouring candidate is:

  • An adult whose weight loss has stabilized
  • A healthy individual without major medical conditions that impair healing or increase risk of surgery
  • A nonsmoker
  • An individual with a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • An individual committed to a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and fitness

The results of body contouring are mostly visible immediately after, though the final results evolve over months up to about two years. Visible scars must be accepted in order to achieve the new proportional body contour. The results are generally long-lasting, provided that a stable weight and general fitness are maintained. With age, some firmness may be lost, but most of the initial improvement should remain.

Good results are expected from body contouring, but there is no guarantee. In many situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results safely with a single procedure and another surgery may be necessary.

Like every surgery, Body contouring includes risks, such as risks from anesthesia, bleeding, fluid collection, infection, poor healing, unfavorable scarring, skin loss, residual or recurrent looseness of skin or contour irregularities, deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, suboptimal aesthetic results, and the possible need for revisionary surgery.
